The Academy Awards recently announced their celebrity line up of presenters for the Oscars, which includes the likes of Selena Gomez, Ben Stiller, Lily Rose Depp and Taylor Swift's ex boyfriend Joe Alwyn. But the news that Joe will be joining the hosting line-up as part of the world’s biggest awards show has struck some fans as hypocritical. After meeting at the MET Gala in 2016, Taylor and Joe reportedly called it quits over "differences in their personalities". At the time, a source revealed: "They've had rough patches before and always worked things out, so friends thought they would take some time apart but eventually come back together.".
As reported by PA Media, he opened up about their split, telling the Sunday Times Style Magazine at the time that it's "unusual and abnormal" for a break-up to "suddenly" be publicised within days and for the world to then be able to "weigh in" on it. He said it was "speculated on," "dissected" and "pulled out of shape beyond recognition".
He said that both him and Taylor "decided to keep the more private details" of their relationship "private," adding that it was "never something to commodify". Now, Swifties have used Joe's previous statement about his and Taylor's split against him, with one fan writing: "Who??? I thought he didn't like being centre of attention." Another added: "I’m not even publicly complaining about him but the general complaint was that he was so 'beyond' the public eye and seemed like he was making Taylor not be in the spotlight because he was private and didn’t like it, but the second they broke up he magically is everywhere.".
However, this was quickly met with accusations of overly parasocial behaviour by other commenters: “Maybe it’s time to move on. This was a relationship between two adults you aren’t close friends with. It’s so crazy to be acting like this.”. Taylor's fans have been known to go after former romantic partners of the megastar before. In 2022, Jake Gyllenhaal spoke up about the cyberbullying he received after Taylor released a 10-minute version of All Too Well, a breakup anthem which fans assumed was about him.
In 2023, the global singer had to publicly ask her fans to stop defending her against her exes, ahead of the release of her album Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), which featured several songs about her previous partners. Taylor has since been dating Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce. The defending champions the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Philadelphia Eagles on February 9, but sadly, victory eluded them, with the final score being a 40-22 loss to the Eagles - something which was reportedly “upsetting for everyone.” However, even despite the setback, the couple are still firmly focused on where the future will take them.
Speaking to PEOPLE magazine, a source told the publication: “Their lives have been a whirlwind since they first started dating. Things seem great between them, and they’re incredibly happy together.”. Celeb obsessed? Get a daily dose of showbiz gossip direct to your inbox.
