Peace lilies are the go-to for a touch of indoor greenery that not only looks stunning but helps purify the air as well. These hardy favourites are ideal even for those with a less-than-perfect track record with plants, but still require some TLC for maximum flourish. A handy tip that won't dig deep into your wallet suggests using something as simple and cheap as banana peel to boost your plant’s vigour, promising blooms that will make your neighbours envious – all just for a modest 13p.
According to one green-fingered person on the Creative Gardening Facebook group, their peace lily was blooming "like crazy" thanks to the nifty use of banana peels, resulting in "big flowers". Alongside a photo showcasing their thriving lily, the user excitedly posted: "I have been watering my peace lily with banana peel water. It has been flowering like crazy with big flowers and growing faster. I have also been watering my other plants with banana water. All are going great.".
Bananas are not just a healthy snack but also a boon for gardeners. "Bananas contain plenty of potassium, which, along with nitrogen and phosphorus, makes up one-third of fertiliser. Potassium, which is particularly useful for flowering plants such as peace lilies, is also super useful when it comes to moving nutrients and water between plant cells, and contains a nutritional cocktail of manganese, calcium, magnesium and sulphur.
A gardener explained her method for creating nutrient-rich banana water: "You put the banana peel in a jar of water with the lid on top and leave it in the water overnight or a couple of days. The water will look cloudy then I put the liquid in a jug to use later. Make sure you cover the peel completely with water. "I use quart mason jars with a lid to soak my peels. When I use the banana water I do add some more water to it about three parts banana water to one part plain water. I also save the water in a jug. We both eat a banana a day so I have a lot of water to save. I water once a week or more often if needed.".
