Travelling abroad can be expensive, but if you choose your destination wisely, you can stretch your money far. From booking holidays far in advance to jetting away during off-peak seasons, there's a number of ways you can stick to a budget and still enjoy a summer trip. But have you thought about switching up your destination? Choosing a location with strong exchange rates and low living costs can make for a more affordable holiday abroad.
According to consumer group Which?, the average cost of a seven-day trip has increased by 4.2 percent, with hotspots like Bulgaria's Black Sea coast up 11.5 percent and Italy up 7.4 percent. So why not choose somewhere you've never been before? A travel money expert has revealed the top five budget-friendly destinations for 2025. Mario Van Poppel, CEO of Manor FX, a leading currency exchange provider, said: "With the right planning, you can stretch your travel budget further than you think. Rising energy costs, airline capacity constraints, and strong demand are pushing prices higher. But by looking beyond traditional destinations, there are still great-value options.".
Here are five scenic and budget-friendly destinations you can visit this summer, according to the currency expert. With a weak Turkish lira, Turkey remains a standout choice. From Istanbul's historic charm to Antalya's beaches, the value is unmatched, Mario said. "Turkey delivers a luxury feel without the high price tag," he explained. Meals cost around £6, and budget-friendly accommodation starts at £20 per night.
This underrated gem offers stunning landscapes and low costs. A three-course meal in Tbilisi is just £10, and wine is often under £2. "Georgia combines breathtaking scenery with incredible affordability," Mario explained. South-East Asia remains a haven for budget travellers, with Vietnam leading the way. "From street food to high-end dining, you can enjoy Vietnam for next to nothing," Mario said. Pho costs less than £2, and hotels start at £30 a night.
Argentina's economic challenges mean favourable exchange rates for visitors. "Whether exploring Buenos Aires or Patagonia, Argentina offers an affordable cultural adventure," Mario explained. A steak dinner with wine costs about £8. Lastly, Bali's mix of luxury and affordability continues to attract visitors. "Few places offer the relaxation and adventure of Bali at such low prices," Mario said. His other top tips for saving money on holiday include watching exchange rates and locking in favourable rates with travel money cards, and skipping popular tourist traps as local spots tend to offer better value.
