Travis Kelce admitted the Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t find a ‘spark’ as they succumbed to a crushing 40-22 Super Bowl defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles. The two-time defending champions were looking to become the first-ever NFL side to win three back-to-back Super Bowls. However, the Chiefs were blown away in New Orleans as a Jalen Hurts-inspired Eagles avenged their narrow 2023 defeat in style.

Nick Sirianni’s team dominated the encounter, racing into a 24-0 lead at half-time courtesy of touchdowns from Hurts, Cooper DeJean and A.J. Brown. And despite coming on strong in the final quarter, the Chiefs fell short in what proved to be a largely one-sided encounter. Kelce, whose future in the sport was a major talking point prior to Sunday’s match, endured a quiet game, finishing with just four catches and 39 yards from six targets.

And speaking after the defeat, the tight end admitted that his side struggled to get their usual game going in the showpiece event. ‘Hats off to the Eagles, man. They got after us. All three phases,’ he said post-match in a brief locker-room interview. ‘Wouldn’t get it going offensively. I mean, they just got after us on all three phases and then on top of that, turnovers, penalties, playing behind the sticks on offense is just … dropped passes, not taking advantage of the play call and executing them, there’s a lot that goes into it.

‘You don’t lose like that without everything going bad.’. Asked what most shocked him about the 18-point defeat, the 35-year-old said: ‘We haven’t played that bad all year.’. ‘We just couldn’t find that spark,’ he continued. ‘We couldn’t find that momentum. ‘This team is gonna fight til the end forever and you saw that. Even with the score late, we were always gonna fight.’. ‘This one’s gonna hurt,’ he concluded when asked about coach Andy Reid’s post-game message to the squad. ‘Let it hurt and figure it out and figure out how to get better because of it.’.

Reid, meanwhile, admitted it was a ‘tough day’ for his side but looked to shoulder the blame for their loss. ‘Today was a rough day,’ the Chiefs coach reflected. ‘We didn’t really play well in any of the phases. I didn’t coach good enough. They did a nice job. ‘I’m proud of our guys, though, for the battle, the fight that they put in throughout the year, and all the games that they played here over the last few years.

‘We’ll learn from this. Like most games here, when you don’t do very well, you learn from it as a coach, you learn from it as a player, and you move on.’.
