A Republican congressman has announced a new bill that could bolster President Donald Trump‘s efforts to take over Greenland, and also rename it. Mr Trump, 78, has wasted no time in his bid to acquire the autonomous Danish territory since becoming president for the second time. He has long set his sights on the Nordic region, despite Denmark insisting it is not for sale. In January, the US President reportedly clashed with Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen over Greenland, saying he would consider imposing tariffs on Denmark if he doesn’t get his way - though the pair have had arguments about this in the past.

Tensions between Mr Trump and Ms Frederiksen arose in 2019 as he scrapped a trip to Denmark, blaming the Danish PM for making a “nasty” statement when she rejected his idea of buying Greenland and calling it an “absurd discussion”. Mr Trump’s renewed interest in acquiring the territory has seen an escalation of calls for the US to purchase it for national security purposes. Earlier this week, Georgia Representative Buddy Carter unveiled a bill to reportedly help the US’s “negotiator-in-chief” acquire Greenland.

It has been given the stripes-and-stars-inspired name of the Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025. “President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal.”. The proposed bill gives a 180-day, or six-month deadline, for a task directing the secretary of the interior’s team to ensure federal paperwork gets updated to the new name, according to the Post.

The bill must first go to a committee for study, before it can move on to a vote in the House. If it were to pass, it would go to the Senate from there. “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Mr Trump said last year on his social media platform, Truth Social. Greenland, located between the Arctic Circle and the North Atlantic, has long been considered a strategic advance for the US. It is also already home to a US air base and radar station.

The region is part of the Danish kingdom but recognises itself as a self-governing territory that has its own laws and its own official language, Greenlandic. “If Russia were to send missiles towards the US, the shortest route for nuclear weapons would be via the North Pole and Greenland," Marc Jacobsen, an associate professor at the Royal Danish Defence College, told the BBC. "That's why the Pituffik Space Base is immensely important in defending the US.".
