Hollywood-owned Wrexham could be busy ahead of the January transfer deadline in a bid to revive their automatic promotion hopes. The Red Dragons, owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have so far brought in one new face in Hull City winger Ryan Longman. Wrexham paid a reported fee of £500,000 for the 24-year-old last week, fending off competition from second-tier side Oxford United. However, their hopes of a top-two League One finish suffered a major blow on Tuesday night as they slumped to a 3-2 home defeat to Stevenage. The result leaves them six points behind second-placed Wycombe Wanders in the table, with leaders Birmingham City holding an eight-point advantage over Phil Parkinson's side.
The manager tore into his players after the Stevenage game, and if Wrexham are to stand any chance of catching their rivals, then more arrivals could be necessary before Monday's deadline. Parkinson confirmed they are still keen to make signings on Thursday, telling The Leader: "We know what we'd like to do. We're trying to bring players in and if we do, great, but if we don't, let's regroup together.".
The North Wales outfit have been closely linked with several strikers during the current window as they have struggled for goals so far this season. With all that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a look at four signings the A-list owners could sanction as they aim to flex their financial muscle ahead of Monday's February 3rd deadline. Reynolds and McElhenney might have to dig deep into their pockets for at least one of these potential signings. Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie is among the players who have been linked with a move to the Racecourse Ground.
As reported by Football League World, the forward would come with a hefty £2m valuation if the Red Dragons choose to pursue the 27-year-old's signature. Hardie joined the Pilgrims in 2020 and has netted 64 goals in 230 appearances, helping the club climb from League Two to the Championship. The Scotsman's goal tally includes 12 in the second tier during Plymouth's first season back in the division last term.
Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith was one of Parkinson's main transfer targets last summer. With his contract set to expire later this year, it appears the Wrexham manager revived his interest in January. According to The Star, an approach has been made to the Championship side by Wrexham about acquiring Smith's services. Despite often coming off the bench, the 33-year-old has netted six goals for the Owls this season.
Wrexham will need to move fast to sign the £500,000-valued player but face a major roadblock as Wednesday boss Danny Röhl is not said to be willing to let him leave. One signing which is looking increasingly likely is Reading striker Sam Smith. The 26-year-old has 11 goals to his name so far this season and is seen as a solution to Wrexham's goalscoring woes, as per Football League World. The Reading Chronicle reported on Thursday that a multi-million pound deal is near to completion after Smith registered double digits in the third tier during the last four campaigns. Reading's financial woes under the ownership of Dai Yongge have left them vulnerable to losing their best players, making this a definite goer.
Reports have also circulated in January that Wrexham may sign Luton Town forward and former England U21 international Cauley Woodrow. The ex-Premier League striker has only started once for the Hatters in the Championship this season, but a move to north Wales could be on the cards, according to Football Insider. The 30-year-old footballer, who has previously scored in the Premier League for Fulham and later played for Barnsley, made 24 appearances last season for his team, mainly as a substitute. His crowning moment was netting a last-gasp equaliser at Crystal Palace in March 2024, making sure the match ended 1–1 deep into stoppage time.
