Championship leaders Leeds United are in desperate need for deadline day signings. They have so far seen four players leaving their side in this transfer window, while scrambling to add reinforcements to the squad. However, with a few hours left before the deadline, late moves cannot be ruled out as they need to bolster their squad which has been depleted due to injuries to key players like Patrick Bamford and Pascal Struijk.
Burnley and Sunderland, placed third and fourth, have a couple of potential transfers lined up on deadline day as they look to catch up with the league leaders. Mirror Football takes a look at the five biggest Championship deals that could be completed before 11pm. Former Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho is expected to make a return to England this winter. Middlesbrough, currently seventh on the table, have reportedly scheduled his medical and the deal is close to being completed.
It was understood that the 28-year-old was a Celtic target for a possible loan, however, there was no agreement and the deal collapsed. Boro, on the other hand, have been in the hunt for a striker this window and seem to have jumped in to seize the opportunity. Iheanacho was signed by La Liga side Sevilla from Leicester last summer, but the move did not work out. The Nigerian failed to find the net even once in his nine appearances for the Spanish club but will hope his fortunes change in the Championship, provided the deal goes through without any hitch.
Sunderland are keen on bringing in Liverpool youngster Jayden Danns. The Black Cats are close to agreeing a loan deal for the 19-year-old striker who is considered a player of high potential by those in charge at Anfield. Danns, son of former Crystal Palace midfielder Neil, has come through the ranks at Anfield and is set for his first senior loan move. He has already made nine senior appearances for Liverpool and recently scored in their 4-0 FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley last month.
Interestingly, Danns also started Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last week. Sunderland will be hoping the youngster sparkles at the Stadium of Light and powers their bid for promotion. Sunderland’s 18-year-old winger Tommy Watson has been in the news, with reports linking him with multiple Premier League clubs including Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Brighton. The teenager, who is a product of the Sunderland academy, has impressed fans and pundits this season and has scored twice in 10 Championship appearances so far.
Brighton’s opening bid of £8m was rejected by the club earlier. However, the Seagulls remain intent on pursuing the winger on deadline day, with a bigger offer in place in the second bid, which could rise to about £12m, or be a £8.5m deal with significant add-ons. While Watson has been sidelined with an injury for several weeks now, Sunderland might be tempted to cash in on this opportunity, given that the youngster has only a year left in his contract. His current deal at the Stadium of the light will end next summer.
After losing four players this winter, bringing in a striker to the club will be one of Leeds’ priorities. They have had their eyes on Southampton forward Cameron Archer for quite some time, only to see their initial bids being rejected. However, according to Fabrizio Romano , Southampton have made an initial agreement to sign Victor Udoh from Antwerp, which could boost Leeds’ chances of acquiring Archer. The Whites have been a striker light, thanks to Bamford’s injury record.
Archer, who joined Southampton in August, has scored five goals in 25 appearances across all competitions this season. The Saints were reportedly reluctant to let go of the striker mid-season. However, progress with Udoh’s transfer might have lightened their stance. Sheffield United, who are placed second in the Championship table currently, have shown interest in signing Japhet Tanganga from Millwall. They had targetted QPR ’s Jimmy Dunne earlier in the window, but a bid for him was turned down.
On the other hand, Tanganga was identified as an alternative and the fact that he will be out of contract at Millwall come this summer, added to the allure. The former Tottenham Hotspur defender is understood to be keen to make the move to Bramall Lane and help United’s push for a promotion this season. United are desperate to add a centre-half to their squad ahead of the transfer deadline. And Tanganga, who has experience playing at the highest level with Spurs, could seamlessly fit the role.
