Celebrating the most enjoyable smaller releases that snuck out before the end of the year. As evidenced by our recent roundup of 2024’s best indie games, there’s been plenty of small creative treats to keep us busy between AAA releases. And despite December being a time of respite and reflection for many, the final month of 2024 still had a handful of festive treats worth diving into and playing. To prove it, below you’ll find a selection of such gems – a handful of fun and delightful titles that capped of December with a bang.

If you’re somehow still pining for something unique or inventive to play after a jamboree of tentpole small releases, we’ve got you covered with our selection of the seven best indie games released in December 2024. Let’s take a look…. Digital Eclipse’s unabashed tribute to the original 90s incarnation of Power Rangers wasn’t perfect at launch. In fact, my review lambasted Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind for its “lack of progression” and “poor combat variety”. However, since then the pixelated beat-em-up has received a handful of game-changing updates, with features such as character movement, boss difficulty, and enemy behaviour all being changed for the better. Honestly? Kudos to Digital Eclipse for listening to and responding to fan feedback so quickly, as now Rita’s Rewind can stand (and brawl) with the classic genre’s best.

Fans of Journey, Abzu, and other games that take a more relaxed approach will get a kick out of Naiad. It’s essentially a laid-back swimmingly simulator where you must guide the titular water spirit through various streams and rivers in the hopes of reaching the ocean, all whilst navigating some tricker waters and light puzzle solving. Sometimes you might be challenged with rescuing animals or breaking through barriers using your sonic boom ability. However, for the most part, Naiad is an incredibly rewarding experience that trusts players to make their own way through the sheer beauty and coziness that nature has to offer.
