If you're a fan of indie games or titles willing to push boundaries creatively and mechanically, then 2024 was a banner year. With development pipelines for AAA games seemingly getting longer all the time, it’s often indie games we can count on most for something to play in between such big tentpole releases. 2024 thankfully proved to be no different, with every month playing host to a jamboree of interactive experiences that were noticeably smaller, but almost always equally as inventive and fun – if not more. It’s the cream of this particular crop that we celebrate in this article, highlighting what we deem to be the best indie games of 2024 on both PC and consoles before the year comes to an end.
Obviously the great thing about indie games is that there’s always an abundance of them to play, yet this also makes it hard to stay on top of everything worth playing. It’s for this reason that you won’t see the likes of Balatro and UFO 50 on this list – two phenomenal indie games a lot of people have enjoyed this year, but for whatever reason we didn’t have the time to get around to. And still, there are so many other indie games worth celebrating. Here’s our favourite smaller gems we’d recommend any indie game fan check out.
Having already dabbled in themes of loss and grief with its initial 2018 release, Gris, developer Nomada Studio yet again managed to capture lighting in a bottle with the equally as emotional and meaningful Neva. It’s a painterly puzzle-platformer centered on the bond between a girl and her mythological animal companion that is just as stunningly beautiful, primed to tug on your heart strings as you follow the pair’s journey to struggle and survive through a dilapidated world. Neva might be short, but the heartfelt punch it delivers in this brief time makes it worth experiencing.
