Arsenal’s third-round FA Cup defeat to Manchester United has highlighted the Gunners’ lack of firepower - an issue which could derail their title bid. Mikel Arteta’s men failed to convert a host of chances against Ruben Amorim’s side, even with United reduced to 10 men early in the second half.

They were unable to score against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, suffering a 2-0 defeat to the Magpies and giving themselves a mountain to climb when they return to St James’ Park for the return fixture next month. The Gunners' struggles in front of goal mean they have also missed opportunities to close the gap on league leaders Liverpool in the Premier League in recent weeks.

Newcastle’s prolific hitman Alexander Isak has been identified as a possible solution to Arsenal’s problems. But with three-and-a-half years left on his contract, it’s unlikely the Gunners will be able to afford the prolific 25-year-old. However, former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour says his former club should now make a move for Wolves’ Brazil international, Matheus Cunha.

And Parlour, who won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups during his 12 years in North London, says recruiting from a rival Premier League team is the best way to get instant results for teams who buy during the January transfer window. “The January transfer window wasn’t a big thing in my playing days,” he said. “The majority of the transfers were always done over the summer, and that was the way it went.
