Alan Titchmarsh welcomed plenty of star-studded guests on Sunday's instalment of Love Your Weekend. During the latest instalment, Alan, 75, welcomed Angela Rippon and Gary Kemp on the heartwarming show. However, before starting his interview with former Strictly Come Dancing star Angela, Alan halted the chat to point out a milestone. Alan said: "Lovely to have you with us and congratulations are due... first of all, Angela, on turning 80! I know it's rude to talk about a lady's age but it's hardly a secret!".
To which Angela, who turned 80 back in October, burst out laughing and admitted: "Well I always say I went to school with too many girls with long memories and big mouths so there is no point lying about it!". This prompted Gary, 65, to add: "Congratulations, you look amazing!" while Alan added: "Oh goodness me!". It comes as Angela took part in the 2023 series of Strictly Come Dancing, where she turned 79 whilst participating in the series, making her the oldest contestant in the show's history.
During the interview on Sunday's show, Angela spoke about her impressive career as well as her time on Strictly. Angela was partnered with pro dancer Kai Widdrington on the show and they were the eighth couple to be eliminated. Renowned for breaking new ground as the first female to regularly present the BBC national news in 1975, Angela has been a pioneer for women in the field of journalism. Her career, decorated with accolades, spans roles as a journalist, television presenter, newsreader, and writer, beginning in 1966 at BBC Plymouth. Angela's extensive experience includes hosting a variety of radio and TV programmes, boasting a resume that features everything from Antiques Roadshow to teaming up with Danny Dyer on The Wall.
She has consistently demonstrated an ability to merge hard-hitting journalism with the sparkle of show business. Her unforgettable high-kick routine behind the news desk and her dance with Ernie in the famed 1976 Morecambe And Wise Show Christmas special remain etched in television history. Fast forward to 2023, and Angela was once again dazzling audiences, this time on Strictly Come Dancing, where she danced her way into week nine alongside her professional partner Kai. As the oldest contestant the show has ever had, she proved that age is just a number when it comes to staying active and vibrant.
