Reprising her role as Felicity in the Motherland spin-off Amandaland, Joanna Lumley confesses she "hardly ever saw" the hit BBC show. The actress, 78, didn’t appear in Motherland until series three, but once she arrived, she quickly stole the show and called her appearance the “greatest fun” - so she was more than happy to embark on the production of its spin-off.

In the six-part series, set to air on February 5, Felicity’s daughter Amanda, played by Lucy Punch, is newly divorced and negotiating the next chapter in her life, as her children Manus and Georgie start secondary school. Despite being one of our favourite TV stars, Dame Joanna Lumley doesn’t watch the small screen often in real life. Living in south London, she spends her time outdoors gardening, or if she’s indoors, doing crafts such as découpage. And she's barely watched the show she starred on.

However, while she admits she’s no TV binger, Joanna loved the handful of Motherland episodes she did see and jumped at the chance to play Felicity. “I hardly ever saw it, but what I did see, I adored,” says Joanna. “It was sensational — fresh, unbelievably different, and full of amazing performances.”.

Recently, she's enchanted fans on Radio 4 with her sitcom Conversations From A Long Marriage alongside actor Roger Allam. The pair have recorded five series so far and there’s an appetite for more. Motherland wasn’t the first time she’d acted as mum to a character played by Lucy — they also starred together in the Hollywood movie Ella Enchanted. Joanna couldn’t be happier to be reunited once more.
