Anthony Mackie has revealed the surprising way he learnt he'd landed the role of Captain America. In Friday's upcoming Graham Norton episode, the actor, 46, lifted the lid on being chosen to play the iconic superhero in the fourth film in the successful series, titled Brave New World. Anthony said he was 'so excited' when he discovered the highly unexpected news while socialising at a star-studded party hosted by none other than Chris Evans - who ended his multi-million dollar Marvel contract in 2019.

Discussing how he came to replace him, Anthony told the BBC show: 'I was at Chris Evans's house for a party, and he said, "I am so happy for you, it's really great.". 'When I said I had no idea what he was talking about, he ran out of the room and got the script page and gives me the scene. He was like a proud dad!. 'I said, "This can't be real" and we both hugged and jumped up and down. We were both so excited.'.

The film is the 35th entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and sees Captain America battle to thwart those behind an international incident after Thaddeus Ross (played by Harrison) becomes President of the United States. On Thursday, Anthony looked stylish as he joined co-star Harrison at the Brave New World photocall in Trafalgar Square. The Avengers: Endgame star, whose character Sam Wilson has taken over the iconic Captain America mantle in the latest film, cut a dapper figure in an olive green Burberry trench coat.

He layered it with a beige jacket, dark green jumper, and a pair of smart black trousers. Meanwhile, Harrison donned a navy suit over a light blue shirt and appeared in high spirits as he posed for snaps on the carpet and also took a moment to interact with fans. Also at the photocall was Danny Ramirez, 32, wearing an all black ensemble consisting of a long coat, knitted roll neck jumper, wide leg jeans, and smart shoes.

Captain America director Julius Onah, 41, was also in attendance along with co-producer Nate Moore, 41. The actor replaced Chris Evans in the iconic role and found out the news from the star himself. Graham Norton with (L-R) Cyndi Lauper, Renee Zellweger, Leo Woodall, Sterling K Brow, Anthony and Lola Young on the hit chat show. Anthony is clearly a fan of the character and he said playing Captain America was like an 'aspect of a dream coming true' at the press conference on Monday.

Plot details about the standalone film have been scarce, but trailers for the movie indicate that Captain America will have a showdown with Thaddeus when the president transforms into the monumental Red Hulk and proceeds to demolish the White House. Brave New World is slated to arrive in theaters February 14, 2025, in what's shaping up to be a critical release for Marvel after recent movies such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Eternals and The Marvels underwhelmed in critic reviews and box office revenues.

Earlier this month, American football-loving Anthony was spotted watching the National Championship in Atlanta as Ohio State beat Notre Dame. He was joined by the likes of LeBron James and Travis Scott at the star-studded sports event. The Graham Norton Show is on BBC One on Friday 31st January at 10.40pm. Also available on BBC iPlayer.
