Arne Slot is set to hold imminent talks over the future of several young Liverpool stars. The Reds lost their unblemished record in Europe on Wednesday night as they lost 3-2 to hosts PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League. Despite the defeat, the occasion provided Slot with an ideal opportunity to run the rule over his squad, having already qualified for the round of 16. The Dutchman named a much-changed side after choosing to leave 12 senior players out of his travelling squad. Players like Jayden Danns, James McConnell, Tyler Morton and Trey Nyoni were among those who featured.
Danns in particular has been linked with a loan move to Championship clubs Stoke City, Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End during the January transfer window. League One Wrexham are also said to be keen on the 19-year-old forward as they look to boost their chances of promotion. The Red Dragons boast significant financial clout since they were taken over by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, enabling them to attract players from higher divisions. Deadpool star Reynolds alone is said to be worth a cool £281 million ($350m).
Wrexham and other suitors will not have to wait long to discover whether Danns is available as Slot has revealed he is due to meet with sporting director Richard Hughes on Thursday. The manager said they were set to discuss plans for the last few days of the transfer window and which players could be allowed to depart Anfield. Speaking after Wednesday night's game, he said: "There’s always a chance in life. And at the moment we have most of our players fit so we will have this discussion tomorrow I think between me and Richard (Hughes) about these players.".
Slot has ummed and ahhed over Danns' immediate future at Liverpool throughout January. The youngster made his breakthrough with the Reds in the latter stages of last season under Jurgen Klopp, earning him major plaudits from the German. Danns has played three times under Slot, scoring in the FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley earlier this month. The manager has voiced uncertainty over whether a loan move will be sanctioned for him, but clearly has no concerns over his attitude.
"I don’t know at the moment to be honest," Slot said when previously questioned about a potential short term exit. "But I think what I like most about him, and with most of the academy players, is the mentality they have.". Slot dropped a hint later in January that Danns may still be part of his plans. Speaking after a recent injury to Diogo Jota, he said: “We have three options, but Jayden did really well when he came in so we have actually four options and it's up to us as a club to make the best possible decision for the near future but also the long-term future of this club.”.
While Danns' next move is currently unknown, one player who impressed Slot enough against PSV to prevent him from being allowed to leave is midfielder James McConnell. He said: "There’s definitely one that will not go out on loan: James McConnell. I liked him a lot today.". He added: "Maybe the end result today would be good for him to go and play (elsewhere) but he is a player who hasn’t played a lot in the last six or seven months as he was injured for a while. He impressed me a lot today.".
