Harvey Elliott's season has not panned out as the attacking midfielder would have hoped. While Liverpool continue to thrive under the guidance of head coach Arne Slot, the 21-year-old Englishman has seen his role significantly reduced compared to last season under former manager Jurgen Klopp.

Elliott, who joined the Reds from Fulham in 2019, enjoyed his breakthrough during the 2022/23 season. His importance grew last season following the departures of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, making 53 appearances across all competitions and playing a key part in winning the Carabao Cup.

This season hasn't come to life yet for the promising youngster, who started the campaign on the bench before a broken foot kept him out for two months. Despite returning to fitness in early December, he has been used sparingly by Slot, with just 53 minutes of Premier League action and no league starts to his name.

That has sparked rumours that he may look for a new challenge elsewhere, though his contract runs until the summer of 2027. But Elliott, who came off the bench to play a part in both of Darwin Nunez’s stoppage-time goals against Brentford at the weekend, insists he will fight for his place in the starting eleven.

His impactful cameo came after what he described as “friendly conversations” in Slot’s office. The frustrated England U21 ace knocked on the boss’ door recently to ask what he could do to earn more minutes on the pitch. He explained: “We've had those conversations but it's not just me. There are other lads in the team who maybe haven't played as much as they want and are probably doing the same thing.
