10-man Manchester United beat Arsenal on penalties after a thrilling FA Cup third-round tie at the Emirates. Mikel Arteta’s side were the favourites going into this match but found themselves frustrated by a stubborn United defence, buoyed by their performance against Liverpool last weekend.

To make matters worse for Arsenal, Gabriel Jesus was stretchered off with what appears to be a serious knee issue, adding to the Gunners’ injury woes. After the break it was United who struck first, with Bruno Fernandes brilliantly finishing a counter-attack that was made by Alejandro Garnacho.

But their smiles didn’t last long as Diogo Dalot – one of many United players to end up in the book – picked up a second yellow card for a nasty challenge on Mikel Merino. Gabriel Magalhaes equalised just minutes later from a set-piece and soon after they looked to take the lead after Kai Havertz won a penalty – which upon further inspection should not have been given.

Justice was done though as an inspired Altay Bayindir brilliantly saved Martin Odegaard’s spot-kick to keep the scores level, with the game going to extra-time. Chances were missed by both sides in the additional 30 minutes so a penalty shootout was required to settle the score.

Havertz had his spot-kick saved and after Joshua Zirkzee made it five perfect penalties, United booked their place in the fourth round draw. Relive all the action from the Emirates with our live blog:. I’ve said it before but what a game of football that was.
