Asda has cut prices on more than 4,000 supermarket products as it brings back its iconic Rollback scheme. The price cuts will be, on average, around 25%, although some will be slashed as much as 50%, and will be introduced to more than 1,200 UK stores, including its Asda Express sites, from today. The discounts come as the supermarket relaunches its Rollback initiative, which aims to move Asda's entire range to a new "Asda Price" which aims to be cheaper than its rivals.

Asda says the first round of price cuts will see many of its "family favourite" products now at 5% lower than promotional offers through Tesco's Clubcard prices or Sainsbury's Nectar prices. This week, Asda scrapped its Aldi and Lidl price match scheme, which saw it match the cheapest price of the two discount supermarkets. The move was part of its plan to lower prices across more everyday products with Asda Price.

Some examples of the cuts include Birds Eye's BBQ Chicken Grills dropping by 50%, from £5.65 to £2.82 for 520g. Ben & Jerries' Luxury Cookie Dough ice cream dropped by 44% from £5.15 to £2.84 for a 465ml tub, and Philadelphia Light cream cheese dropping by 45% from £3.25 to £1.78. As mentioned before, it's not just food seeing the price cuts, as Andrew Toilet Tissue Quilters (9 pack) are now £4.74 - 27% cheaper than the previous price of £6.50.

The supermarket says the discounts launched today will not just be a "short-term deal", but after the Rollback prices end, they will move onto the new "Asda Price" - which will be lower than the pre-Rollback price. The chain will also continue to add thousands of new products to Rollback at regular intervals during the year as it looks to move its entire range to Asda Prices. Allan Leighton, Asda’s Executive Chairman, said: “Asda was built upon helping hard working families save money and we’re refocussing on that mission by bringing back Rollback and Asda Price. We’re lowering prices throughout our stores and online to make Asda the cheapest traditional supermarket and in the process returning to what makes Asda special - delivering unbeatable value to the customers and communities who count on us.”.
