Erik ten Hag has been SNUBBED by Borussia Dortmund despite links with the German side. Dortmund had been on the lookout for a new manager since deciding to sack Nuri Sahin earlier this month. Ten Hag had been one of the favourites for the job after being spotted at a number of games, while it was suggested that he had a 'very good' relationship with Dortmund advisor and former captain Matthias Sammer.

But the German giants have gone in a completely different direction after confirming the appointment of former Bayern Munich and Monaco boss Niko Kovac. The Croatian will take charge after this weekend’s clash with Heidenheim. Speaking about the appointment, Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken said: "We have had intensive discussions with Niko Kovac over the past few days and have deliberately taken the time to get to know each other and our expectations better. Energy, determination and a sense of the importance of the team spirit have always distinguished Niko's teams.

"We want to feel and see all of this on and off the pitch. We are in a challenging sporting situation and are sure that in Niko we have found the coach who is able to master it.". Kovac, 53, added: "The talks with Lars Ricken were very constructive, with the necessary depth, clarity and familiarity appropriate to the situation. All those responsible at BVB gave us a very good feeling in the talks, so I am convinced that we can achieve a lot together in the future.

“First and foremost, it is now a matter of bringing the absolute will, a big heart and the willingness to work hard to represent Borussia Dortmund in the best possible way in the Bundesliga, the Champions League and in the Club World Cup in the summer. We are tackling this challenge with determination and focus.". Was Erik ten Hag a success at Manchester United? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Dortmund’s decision leaves Ten Hag in a tricky position as he attempts to find his next role. The Dutchman was sacked by United in October and has been linked with a variety of roles including RB Leipzig and a potential return to former club Ajax. Ten Hag was not the only former United boss linked with Dortmund though. Ex-interim head coach Ralf Rangnick was also reportedly among the contenders having held a ‘secret meeting’ with Dortmund executives.

Rangnick is currently the head coach of the Austrian national team, a role he has held since April 2022. His contract runs until the end of the current year.
