Peter Wright struck a mighty blow for the old guard by sensationally turfing world champion Luke Humphries off his Ally Pally throne. On an astonishing night of drama, ‘Snakebite’ Wright summoned the venom to knock Cool Hand Luke out of the Paddy Power PDC World Championship fourth round with a stunning 4-1 win.
And at 54, he can dare to dream of a third title and becoming the oldest world champion in the Professional Darts Corporation era. Every time Humphries put him under pressure, Wright came up with stunning answers. If you thought the kaleidoscopic clown was ready wind down his career to count his chickens on his Suffolk farmstead, think again. Instead, it was Humphries who was guilty of counting his chickens after being spooked by the Scot’s mind games.
A mellow creature even when he’s riled, Humphries had been needled by Wright’s wayward prediction that Raymond van Barneveld would “smash” him into the long grass here - a forecast which never came to pass because Barney fell by the wayside at the first hurdle.
“I'm one world title away from almost matching his career and I'm about 25 years younger,” sneered Cool Hand Luke. But when the trash talking stopped and the tungsten started flying, Wright defied the formbook. And at bang on 11pm, he pinned double eight to end Humphries’ reign with a performance for the ages. Wright said: “How did I knock out the world champion? Because I’m a double world champion and I want to win it a third time.
