Brooks Koepka takes brutal swipe at Rory McIlroy's major drought ahead of 'The Showdown'

Brooks Koepka could not resist a cheeky dig at his PGA Tour rival Rory McIlroy, ahead of their upcoming matchplay clash at 'The Showdown' on Tuesday. Teaming up with former-foe-turned-teammate Bryson DeChambeau, Koepka is part of the LIV Golf pairing set to challenge McIlroy and his PGA Tour ally Scottie Scheffler. They will contest over 18 holes of matchplay in Las Vegas, paying three different formats in foursomes, fourball, and singles played across six-hole stretches.
As the build-up continues leading to the event at Shadow Creek, the trash talk between Koepka and McIlroy started to heat up during an open range session on Monday. Koepka opted to take aim at McIlroy's major championship record with the Northern Irishman win-less on the flagship event since 2014. He was quick to point out that himself, along with Scheffler and DeChambeau, have notched up nine titles in the meantime.
"To be fair, I think we have won - between us and his partner - we have won nine majors," Koepka remarked during an interview with CNN. "Since Rory has won his last one. So I mean, he has not won in 10 years. It has been a long time right? " Playing along, DeChambeau contributed: "It has been a while.".
They went further to reminisce about where they were career-wise when McIlroy last triumphed in a major tournament. Keen to stir the pot, Koepka quizzed DeChambeau, with a smirk: "What were you doing? Were you in college?" to which DeChambeau nodded: "Yeah I was a sophomore. Hadn't won a college event yet.".
