Harry Maguire’s own words must have been ringing in his ears after watching the Rangers substitute Cyriel Dessers take advantage of his dreadful blunder to rifle the ball hard and low into the bottom corner. When James Tavernier launched the ball upfield two minutes from time, it should have been a routine headed clearance for Maguire. But the England centre-back completely misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing Dessers to bring it down on the turn and slam home a brilliant finish.

But just when it appeared that Maguire’s mistake had gifted Rangers a dramatic late equaliser, Bruno Fernandes rode to the rescue to spare his team-mate’s blushes and Amorim more pain.
Racing into the penalty area, the United captain met Lisandro Martinez’s lovely inswinging cross with a firm volley to rifle the ball under Jack Butland and secure a victory that now leaves them strongly positioned to qualify automatically for the Europa League round of 16.
