Bruno Fernandes insists Ruben Amorim did not mean his scathing analysis of Manchester United last week after he described the current team as the worst in the club’s history. Speaking after United’s 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton last weekend, Amorim did not hold back after giving his players a dressing down at full time.

‘Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me,’ Amorim said. ‘We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that. ‘We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you [media] want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.’.

Amorim has since admitted that he regretted his comments and claimed he found it difficult to hide his frustration. When asked about Amorim’s comments after United beat Rangers in the Europa League this week, Fernandes said: ‘I don’t want to see my manager saying certain things about the team because I know he doesn’t feel that.

‘I’m pretty sure in the moment of rage, I’m Portuguese, we fever pretty quick, the blood comes out very, very quick. ‘It’s that moment but to be honest, I was here with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer], one of the calmest people I’ve met and he had this rage at the players sometimes.
