Callum McGregor highlights key tactical tweak which will enable Celtic to regain upper hand over Rangers following heavy Old Firm defeat

Callum McGregor feels Celtic need to alter their tactical approach against Rangers if they’re to maintain the upper hand in Old Firm games. Thursday’s comprehensive loss at Ibrox was the first time Brendan Rodgers’ side had tasted defeat in the fixture since May 2023, with a seven-game unbeaten derby run coming to an end.

Despite Philippe Clement having to piece together a defence, the visitors had only one meaningful shot on goal — with their midfield unable to exert any degree of control. Coming on the back of a victory in the Premier Sports Cup final which saw the Belgian’s side cause more problems than in their previous losses, Parkhead skipper McGregor believes his team may now have to rethink their approach to playing Rangers.

‘They were set up with the low block and we were finding it hard to get through,’ he conceded. ‘We need to look at that and we need to tweak it a little bit to give us a wee bit more comfort in the game and allow us to get the territory that will make us comfortable.
