Despite losing their grip on the trophy they won last year, Rangers were more competitive than they were when they lost 3-0 at Celtic Park in the first Premiership clash of this season. Asked if a renewed challenge from the other side of the city would be good for Celtic, the Parkhead skipper said: ‘Yes, and listen, Rangers are a good side. You see them in Europe and they’re playing really well. They’re starting to gain momentum in the league as well.

‘You know when you come to a cup final that you have to do a lot right to win the game. In the second half, we did. Callum McGregor says the nature of Celtic's Premier Sports Cup win made it even more pleasing. Celtic's captain believes that the secret of their shootout success was their trust in each other.

McGregor is proud to have equalled the great Billy McNeill's total of 23 major honours with Celtic. ‘Rangers did a lot right as well, so it made for a really good game. When you’re in these moments, the most important thing is winning. ‘Over the years, we’ve won a lot of cup finals and we’ve done it in different fashions. This is one that was a lot harder than some of the other ones, but that makes it even more pleasing.’.
