New Channel 4 documentary Go Back To Where You Came From is already causing controversy before it has even aired. The series, which begins on Monday 3 February, sets out to challenge how British people feel about asylum seekers and immigration by following six people as they experience what life is like for an asylum seeker. However, viewers online who have seen the trailer and profiles of the documentary’s participants don’t think the show is a good idea.
“I’m all for a bit of controversy but I think @Channel4 have taken it too far with this one!!!” wrote one viewer, while a second commented: “#Channel4 new Documentary #GoBackToWhereYouCameFrom on TV in 2025 - people GO to #Syria to SEE why/how boats are coming to #uk Thats gonna open up a chain of carnage.”.
A third said: “They’ve sent 6 Brits on a Channel 4 show called #gobacktowhereyoucamefrom in order to prove how s*** their countries are and why we should reject them,” while a fourth said: “Exploitative trash masquerading as social experimentation.”.
One poster was more hopeful, adding: “It will be interesting to see how @Channel4 portrays this situation.”. Amnesty International has also criticised the series, saying in a statement from refugee and migrant rights director Steve Valdez-Symonds: “The miserable title, along with the prospect of seeing a handful of Britons sampling experiences they can never really share with the people who truly endure them for months or even years on end, may be sensational enough to attract viewers but serious subjects like the plight — and all too frequent death — of people seeking asylum deserve more sensitivity, more attention to real experience and more education about their circumstances and rights than this show seems designed or capable of offering.”.
