Grammy-nominated singer Gracie Abrams has spoken out after a fan petition to replace Dora Jar as the opener for her European and UK tour made the rounds online. On Friday, alt-pop singer Dora Jar announced that she’d landed the gig as Abrams’ opener in February and March of the tour, playing shows in cities like Nottingham, Leeds, London, Manchester, Cardiff, Dublin, and Glasgow.
However, some fans seemingly disagreed with the choice of opener, with many complaining online and even sharing what appeared to be a crowdfunding campaign to have her replaced on the tour. An anonymous fan using the alias Dexter Morgan – a character from the TV series Dexter – posted the Change.org petition.
The description of the petition included the explanation that fans ‘are perplexed as we do not recognise [Dora Jar] and with less than two weeks till the tour, it’s virtually impossible to familiarise ourselves with her slow-paced songs.’. The campaign sought for Jar to be replaced by ‘a more well-known, energetic artist or band.’.
Jar responded to the social media campaign on Saturday, writing online: ‘Hate comes with the job, the truth is this is the biggest outpouring of love I’ve ever received from a fanbase who is still unfamiliar with me. Gracie has beautiful open hearted fans and I am so excited for this.’.
Now, Abrams – who has been rumoured to be dating Paul Mescal – herself has spoken out, commenting on a post about the issue on Stereogum’s Instagram page. She commented on the post: ‘Just hearing about this absolute ridiculousness… so wildly uncool and bizarre and also just does not remotely add up. I’ve only seen everyone’s total excitement and I couldn’t be luckier or prouder to share a stage with this talented wonder.
