Dundee manager Tony Docherty felt his players passed another huge test of character to squeeze past Dundee United and advance to the fifth round of the Scottish Cup. Without a win against the Tangerines in any competition since 2017, the Dark Blues claimed a famous triumph through Simon Murray’s first-minute header.
Dundee’s reward for the victory was a home tie with Airdrie. Elsewhere, Celtic host Raith Rovers, Rangers entertain Queen’s Park and Aberdeen take on Dunfermline with Scott Brown taking his Ayr side back to his first club Hibs. Thrilled by the way his players started the game then dug in for 89 minutes plus five minutes added-on time, Docherty said: ‘We were absolutely delighted to get that fast start and then to hold out, as well. It wasn’t the kick-off we intended, but that’s what I love about these players.
‘On the pitch recently they’ve been making the right decisions, more often than not, and that allows us to get a corner and then we score from a brilliant run from Simon, something we’ve worked on. We have about four centre-halves out at the moment, which is unprecedented. Five, if you include Jordan McGhee in that.
‘It’s a clean sheet that the whole team work for. It’s not just your defenders. It’s from your furthest up the pitch, which is Simon Murray, all the way back. Dundee boss Tony Docherty celebrates their first win against Dundee United since 2017.
