The devastated relatives of an 11 year old girl, who tragically died alongside her mother in a catastrophic medical jet crash, have spoken of their unbearable grief, saying they're "experiencing all the pain in the world" while heartfelt tributes flood in for the victims. Young Valentina Guzman Murillo and her mum Lizeth Murillo Ozuna, aged 31, were among the seven lives claimed by the disaster when a medical plane went down in a Philadelphia neighbourhood on Friday night.
Valentina had just had a significant medical operation in the States for a serious health issue and was en route back to Mexico with her mother when the tragedy struck. The ill-fated Learjet 55 had barely left Northeast Philadelphia Airport when it was captured on shocking video bursting into flames mid-air before crashing to the ground.
All people aboard, including Captain Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales, Copilot Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez, Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo, and paramedic Rodrigo Lopez Padilla, perished, as confirmed by Mayor Cherelle Parker in a statement on Saturday. A motorist on the ground also lost their life due to the impact, and the crash left dozens injured, with three still fighting for their lives in critical condition and five others remaining hospitalised, reports the Mirror US.
In a moving tribute on social media, Fabi Guzman, a relative of Valentina and Lizeth, mourned the tragic loss of Valentina and Lizeth. She expressed, "With all the pain in the world and on behalf of my family, I want to thank you for each of your messages and calls. We are going through a very painful time and our hearts are in pieces. I ask for prayers and eternal rest for my girls.". Valentina had been receiving treatment at Shriners Children's Philadelphia for some time before the devastating incident, as confirmed by the hospital. "Shriners Children's is heartbroken to confirm that one of our paediatric patients and the child's mother were aboard the Jet Rescue Air Ambulance that crashed in Philadelphia," they disclosed.
César Esparza, who knew Valentina through her school community, told the New York Times she was revered as a "fighter". This sentiment was echoed by Shai Gold, a representative for Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, which operated the ill-fated plane. Gold paid respects to Valentina's courage: "She did her course of care. She was going home. She fought quite a lot to survive, and unfortunately, this tragedy on the way home," she stated.
Heartache extends beyond these tributes, with others affected by the accident coming forward. Shantelle Fletcher disclosed the dire condition of her cousin Dominique, aged 33, who was injured during the event. Speaking to NBC10 on Sunday, she revealed, "She is in a medically-induced coma. Seventy percent of her body is burnt. She's responding well to medication. She has surgery scheduled for today.".
Trey Howard, aged 10, is also in hospital following the incident where metal struck him in the head while he was in a vehicle close to the crash site. His father, Andre Howard, shared that his son was shielding his sister when it happened. "The way it landed, it was only because he laid on his sister, he landed right on the right side of his head," he explained. Get email updates with the day's biggest stories.
