The Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s series The Sandman has been cancelled after two seasons. This is the one of the final shows being adapted from Gaiman’s work to confirm its future after a series of sexual assault allegations were levelled against him, which he has firmly denied. In a new statement showrunner Allan Heinberg said: ‘The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022 [the year the show was renewed], when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough for one more season.
‘We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.’. The 10-episode adaptation of the popular 90s comic book aired the first season in 2022 starring Tom Sturridge, Jenna Coleman and David Thewlis, with Gaiman acting as a writer and executive producer.
There has been plenty of speculation over the future of the series after sexual assault allegations first came out against the 64-year-old author in July 2024. A further exposee of his alleged behaviour was reported by New York Magazine in which eight women discussed their experiences with the author including a nanny, Scarlett Pavlovich, who claimed she was assualted in the presence of Gaiman’s five-year-old son.
She also alleged she was sexually assaulted in a bathtub, called his ‘slave’ multiple times, and he ejaculated on her faced despite her saying ‘no’. The fantasy author has denied the allegations, saying he has ‘never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.’. The Sandman was also mentioned in the article with Pavlovich alleging she was ordered to ‘suck him off’ while he watched screeners for the first season of the show.
In other incidents Pavlovich alleged she was forced to consume vomit and urine. His former wife Amanda Palmer, who introduced the pair, shared a statement on social media, asking for privacy as she focuses on parenting their child amid ongoing divorce proceedings. A month after the allegations from five women first broke from Tortoise media in July 2024, Netflix axed another Gaiman adaptation, Dead Boy Detectives, after only one season.
Later that year, Amazon Prime announced that Good Omens season three, starring David Tennant and Michael Sheen, had been reduced to a one-episode 90-minute finale with Gaiman not involved in production. Prime’s other comic adaptation of Anansi Boys is still expected to premiere on the streaming platform later this year after a few years of development. But Dark Horse Comics, the publisher for the Anansi Boys comics, recently cut ties with Gaiman saying it ‘takes seriously the allegations against Neil Gaiman’, per Radio Times.
Meanwhile, Disney has reportedly halted development of Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book series acoording to sources per the IndieWire who said ‘multiple factors, including the allegations, contributed to putting it on hold.’. There is currently no release date for the final episodes of Good Omens, The Sandman or Anansi Boys. In a blog post made by Gaiman, he wrote: ‘I’ve spent some months now taking a long, hard look at who I have been and how I have made people feel.
‘Like most of us, I’m learning, and I’m trying to do the work needed, and I know that that’s not an overnight process.’. The author said he understood that ‘not everyone will believe me’ and added he would be ‘doing my very best to deserve their trust, as well as the trust of my readers’.
