BBC Question Time host Fiona Bruce was left stunned by an audience member during a debate on whether Donald Trump was ‘Master of the Universe’. The BBC’s flagship political debate show took place in Glasgow in the most recent episode and kicked off with the question: ‘When was Donald Trump elected Master of the Universe?’.

The hyperbolic statement was debated by the panellists – Kate Forbes MSP, Michael Shanks MP, Russell Findlay MSP, Lorna Slater MSP and journalist Alex Massie – as well as the diverse audience. During one interaction the 60-year-old presenter pointed to a man in the audience, asking if ‘anyone thinks there is some merit’ in what Donald Trump’s doing. ‘I think that’s the wrong question,’ the man responded, prompting laughter from everyone in the studio and Bruce taking on a shocked but amused expression.

‘Oh, I stand corrected Sir, what should it be?’ she asked, laughing. The man then replied: ‘Let me qualify that, because the merit is in his strategies and what his objectives are, so there is a merit in what he is doing, whether you agree with that or not. ‘What dismays me is that this is not a surprise. Donald Trump’s actions have all been mapped out for some time. ‘And what surprises me is that politicians don’t seem to have a strategy that manages the balance of working with him as he is the President of America, but also challenging some of his actions, because, without those challenges, it normalises what he is doing.’.

More generally, there was some criticism about the focus on the US President during the Scotland-based episode. ‘BBC QT from Glasgow spent more time talking about Trump & Palestine than affairs that affect the country as a whole,’ @louisniice wrote on X. ‘Can’t believe Glasgow audience returned more questions about Trump?’ @jdmillo69 shared. ‘BBC QT Needs to focus on the issues in this country and stop being obsessed with President Trump,’ @tony_wealth echoed.

It’s not the first time the Antiques Roadshow host has had a hiccup on the Question Time floor. In October, she insisted to Trade Minister Douglas Alexander that labour had not used the term ‘working people’ in their manifesto when they, in fact, used it. The BBC was forced to edit the error and published a statement clarifying the mistake had been edited out. And in June she faced backlash from viewers after breaking her own rule during an election Question Time special between former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Labour leader Keir Starmer, Sir Ed Davey and John Swinney MSP.

After declaring one of the rules would be no interruptions for leaders who ‘keep [their] questions reasonably brief, and actually answer the question’, the audience pointed out she regularly interjected. Question Time airs on BBC One every Thursday at 10:40pm. Got a story?.
