Sir Stephen Fry has expressed his "delight" at scooping a cool £250,000 on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? with a little help from host Jeremy Clarkson during the celebrity edition of the show. The ITV quiz, once helmed by Chris Tarrant, introduced an "ask the host" lifeline when it made its comeback in 2018 with Clarkson at the helm. The former QI mastermind, also known for his acting and comedy, turned to Richard Osman, the brainy Pointless host and writer, for the £500,000 stumper via the 'phone a friend' option.
Clarkson hailed it as the "biggest celebrity win since I started (on) this show", dubbing it a "whopping win", after Sir Stephen chose to pocket the £250,000 rather than risk it all. Faced with a question about the longest gap between an original song and its cover version, Osman couldn't provide the needed assistance.
Nonetheless, Sir Stephen was overjoyed, saying: "I am delighted and I am not complaining at all," and remarked on how "It was extremely good fun. The time goes so quickly." Reflecting on his previous stint on the show in 2005, where he won £125,000 for charity alongside culinary queen Nigella Lawson, Sir Stephen praised Clarkson's support, especially with the pivotal query that escalated his winnings to a quarter of a million.
He said: "Jeremy is very encouraging, and he was great with the question that took me to a quarter of a million. It was a geographical question, and you had to work it out. Jeremy has travelled so much, particularly in the area that the question was about. He and I kind of agreed that it was one of two answers, and I thought ‘I am going to risk it’, and fortunately, it was right.".
