Who Wants to Be a Millionaire stunned fans by airing a show first with celebrity guest Fred Sirieix. The First Dates host joined Jeremy Clarkson on the quiz show today, aiming to raise funds for his own charity, The Right Course. Things got off to a bad start, however, when he was immediately stumped by the £100 question. The first question asked Fred: “Which of these is a method for staying afloat in a swimming pool?” with his answer options being treading water, drinking water, boiling water, or passing water.
Fred immediately ruled out drinking water and boiling water, but was torn between the other two less obvious phrases. He then opted to use his 50/50 on the very first question, but it removed the answers he’d already decided were wrong. Jeremy seemed to realise Fred was stuck between a rock and a hard place, and didn’t want him to go out on the first question. He jokingly said: “Do you know what? I’m going to put you out of my misery,” as the audience laughed.
The Top Gear alum then explained what the terms meant, giving Fred the answer of “treading water,” which he quickly locked in as his final answer. “I don’t know how you worked that out, but well done!” Jeremy sarcastically congratulated. Alongside Jeremy basically giving Fred the answer, the show’s official Twitter page - formerly known as X - suggested that Fred’s use of a 50/50 on the £100 question might have made history.
Alongside a gif of the moment, the ITV show wrote: “Is this a #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire first? Fred has used his #FiftyFifty on the first question!”. In the comment section, many viewers were equally shocked by Fred’s slow start. “His daughter will find that amusing I expect… @fredsirieix1… But that is what lifelines are for,” one person said, referring to the star’s incredibly successful daughter Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix, who’s an Olympic diver.
“And still needed Jeremy to give him the answer,” another person added, alongside mindblown emojis. A third fan reasoned: “English not his first language so perhaps he can be excused.”. Jeremy himself brought up the slight language barrier as Fred left the show, having managed to change his odds and win an impressive £64,000. Fred agreed that seeing as his first language is French, there are some English words and phrases he simply doesn’t know, and admitted it could be “annoying” to realise luck was against him on some questions.
Fred immediately followed Strictly Come Dancing star Anton Du Beke on the show, who had a show first of his own. Unfortunately, Anton was caught out on a £32,000 question themed around musicals. He used both his 50/50 and asked the audience, but ended up answering incorrectly. The star knew he was taking a risk by attempting the question, so had already sworn that if he ended up losing money he’d stump up the cash for charity himself. "I'll tell you what I am going to do. I am going to go with the Book Of Mormon and if I get it wrong I am going to give the charity £15,000 of my own money. I'm gonna go for Book Of Mormon, final answer,” he said - and ended up £15,000 out of pocket.
