Transform your drab garden into a colourful oasis with these beautiful winter flowers. It's easy to just abandon our once-green and vibrant back yard when winter comes. The trees are bare, our patio furniture is all wrapped up, and the blooms that flourished throughout summer are now nowhere to be seen. However, you can still jazz up your garden in the winter - even if the rain refuses to stop and temperatures plunge below freezing. We've compiled four hardy flowers, recommended by experts, that can all put up with the dreary weather and will bloom as early as this month. So, what are you waiting for?.
Snow drops are one of the first plants to flower in the new year, and provide a touch of elegance to any garden. They're much sturdier than they look, and will grow in pretty much any soil - except if it's permanently wet. Plant them in the winter in partial shade in a well-drained area and watch them bloom between January and March.
The Eurasian genus Helleborus are a classic winter flower that have a long blooming period - meaning you'll get a colourful display that lasts well into spring. They prefer shade, but can cope in a sunnier spot as long as the soil doesn't get too dry.
"Despite the common name of winter rose, hellebores are members of the buttercup family," explained experts over at National Trust. "They flower all the way through winter, from late November onwards, and their colours range from pure white to dark purple.".
