From parkrun to changing TV channels, we can all do something new to conquer 2025

Pull that cracker hat back on people and hunt out the Baileys!. Festive glee remains high in the Mason household even as we’re well into January and feeling flabby. This year I’m channelling the new year spirit of Sue Perkins, who always tells her comedy partner that this year is theirs… 2025 is ours!.

I am reflecting on ways we can all drive new-year morale through sport. In this, I fully endorse the ‘Minimum Viable Effort’ school of thought. It’s a phrase coined by Stanford researcher BJ Fogg (no relation to the Jules Verne character, but similarly impressive) who contends that lasting behavioural change is easier than we think.

And it does seem hard when we’re filing a million resolutions to be a brand new amazing person in 2025. No need for amazingness, friends. Start tiny. Choose the path of least resistance. Here are some ideas. I’m not leading with exercise because it’s bloody cold. When you’re channel surfing or on YouTube or TikTok this week, actively watch a sport you know nothing about.

Research shows the best way to keep brain cells firing as we age is to find new hobbies and master new challenges. When you do, your brain makes completely new connections, like the bodybuilding muscles. Doing so this week sparked my brain up deliciously. Within minutes of the freeski Klagenfurt World Cup women’s big air final we were predicting scores, getting behind new athletes and acquiring favourite moves.
