A man was fatally electrocuted while gardening after taking a saw to a tree. The 54-year-old, named by police as Vicente Morgado, died while trimming the mesquite tree at the Our Lady Queen of Angels church in La Joya, Texas. In a tragic accident, Mr Morgado hit a power line with his saw and suffered a fatal electric shock. He was left trapped until medics got him down two hours later, when he was sadly pronounced dead, his family said.
Police in the Hidalgo County city said the accident occurred at around 9.30am on Saturday morning on South Leo Street. Mr Mordago, a landscaper originally from Mexico, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lieutenant Manuel Casas said Mr Morgado had been trying to clear trees away from the power lines ahead of an upcoming cold snap when he accidentally made contact. The police official issued an urgent warning for people to contact their electricity boards when attempting to do so, as "it's a very dangerous thing to do".
Tributes have been paid to Mr Morgado following the tragedy, with his family describing him as someone who "always brought joy to everybody". Son Sebastian Morgado told Texas media his father was a well-known figure in the community. “I wish I can be half the man he was. If I ever am, I'll be happy,” he told 5News. “He took pride in his work, he loved this town,” he said. “He always had a smile on his face, always brought joy to everybody.".
A Gofundme page set up by Mr Morgado's family described him as a "beloved father" who died "doing what he loved". Sebastian said: "This man poured his entire being into doing what he loved and when you think of the words Vicente Morgado you can always picture a man with a cheerful spirit a warm heart unwavering kindness and infectious smile.
