In the UK, more than 20 million adults take a vitamin or supplement. That’s nearly a third of the population. It means the supplement market is an impressive money spinner for health brands. Take Holland & Barrett, which revealed it sold a tub of its £16.99 High Strength Turmeric Capsules every second in 2024. But is it worth splashing out on health supplements?.
We asked nutritionist Alexa Mullane, founder or Nutrition By Alexa, to analyse Holland & Barrett’s eight best-selling supplements of 2024 and weigh up which ones you should actually be taking. From zinc to magnesium, here’s the lowdown as to whether your vitamin and supplement capsules are actually doing you any good...
Nutritionist Alexa Mullane, founder or Nutrition By Alexa, analyses Holland & Barrett’s eight best-selling supplements of 2024 and weighs up which ones you should actually be taking. It might be Holland & Barrett’s best-selling supplement with a 67 per cent increase in sales this year, but according to Mullane, turmeric is one you can definitely dodge.
‘Turmeric has a compound called curcumin in it,’ the nutritionist explains, ‘which does have amazing anti-inflammatory properties. But it’s easy to add turmeric into your cooking of soups and curries, or even use it to brew tea. That way you get all the health benefits, and save some cash.’.
So basically, copy what they’ve been doing in India for centuries, and you’ll get your boost. Mullane says one thing you need to keep in mind is turmeric on its own is difficult for the body to absorb. ‘Add it to dishes with some fat, such as coconut oil or olive oil, which aids your body’s absorption of it’ she advises.
