The injury had forced McColgan out of a planned marathon bow in 2023 but so far her preparations for this year’s event are going well with recent tune-up outings over 10k and the half in Dubai.
And while McColgan’s deal with shoe brand Asics continues to be her main source of income and UKA’s decision is “not the be all and end all”, the multiple national record holder admitted: “I was obviously a little bit disappointed.
“It was disappointing to feel like I had now come out the other side, so to lose that support when you feel like you’ve got to the end of the tunnel was frustrating.
Being on the programme provided her with medical support which she relied upon heavily when recovering from a knee injury that sidelined her for much of 2023 and last year.
McColgan is the troubled event’s reigning 10,000m champion and can understand the logistical difficulty of shutting down a city to stage a marathon.
