Fans of Gavin and Stacey have pieced together a disconcerting theme on the hit show. The BBC sitcom ran from 2007 to 2019, but it’s taken some fans to notice an easter egg running through the series - just in time for its Christmas special. The show revolves around Gavin and Stacey Shipman, with Stacey’s maiden name being West. Some viewers have noticed that the duo’s names might be an eerie note from the writers.

On Reddit, one fan wrote: “There's a joke about the Wests and the Shipmans in the episode where Gavin and Stacey get married, about whether it's worse to be named like Fred West or Harold Shipman, but recently I realised that Dawn and Pete also have a serial killer surname, they have the same last name as the Yorkshire Ripper [Sutcliffe]. I just wondered if anyone else had noticed, or knew anything about it, it just made me and my mum a bit confused haha.”.

A second responded: “Never noticed it, but good catch! The writers probably realised they had more than one serial killer surname with the Wests and Shipmans, so maybe they just played into it and added another.”. A third argued: “Yeah I thought it was totally obvious though rather than subtle. Mind you that's probably because I read a lot of books about serial killers and most of the documentaries I watch are about them too, so to me it was like a nice (?) touch.”.

While fans thought that writers added a clever touch with the surnames West, Shipman, and Sutcliffe, they also called out the show recently after noticing a glaring plothole. One person pointed out how Stacey’s family didn’t seem to have an income, writing: "I’ve been rewatching the show as preparation for Xmas day! But something I’ve picked up since rewatching is that Gwen and Bryn seem to never talk about or be employed?".
