Den of Thieves 2: Pantera stole the crown from last week's winner to land at the top of the box office. The thriller, starring Gerard Butler as an LA police officer in Europe trying to track down O'Shea Jackson Jr's would-be crook who is planning a big diamond heist, debuted with a solid $15.5 million in ticket sales at the domestic weekend box office, according to Box Office Mojo, in spite of poor reviews from critics.
Audiences gave the action-adventure a solid 78-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ on CinemaScore, in spite of the lackluster reaction from critics. 'These movies are made for audiences, not critics,' David A. Gross from Franchise Entertainment Research told Variety.
'Gerard Butler is an established action star, and this kind of good-guys-versus-bad-guys material plays well around the world. Foreign business should be solid.'. The box office take has not yet opened in the international market, and the initial domestic opening did not cover the movie's $40 million budget.
