Authorities said many people were inside the venue at the time of the attack, which is located in the city’s Olympic Village neighbourhood.
Deputy Mayor Chloe Pantel said the venue was ‘a spot where locals and people from outside the neighbourhood gather, especially to watch football matches’.
Mayor Piolle said the prefecture extended its ‘full support to the victims and their loved ones’ and condemned what it called ‘this cowardly and criminal act or unprecedented violence’.
Grenoble mayor Eric Piolle condemned the attack in the ‘strongest terms’ and thanked the emergency services for their ‘rapid intervention’.
Prosecutors are still piecing together a motive for the attack but have ruled out terrorism and suggest it may have been linked to a ‘settling of scores’, possibly connected to drug trafficking.
