Heavy snowfall closes runways at airports including Manchester and Liverpool

Dozens of flood alerts are in effect across England and Wales and new warnings for rain have been issued following snowfall across the UK. The Met Office has warned we could be in for a ‘rapid thaw’ after vast amounts of snow fell over the weekend, closing runways at several UK airports.

As much as 12cm of snow fell in some areas on Saturday night, with the coldest temperature recorded -11°C at Loch Glascarnoch in Scotland. Looking forward to the new week, the majority of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England are covered by snow and ice warnings set to last until around midday.

New yellow weather warnings for rain have also been issued, covering most of Wales, central and western England, and most of the south west and south east of England. The Met Office warned: ‘Further heavy rainfall may lead to some transport disruption in places.’.

The A66 will remain closed in both directions into Monday morning amid heavy snow in the region. The road is closed in both directions between the A1M Scotch Corner and the M6 at Penrith. National Highways are advising drivers who had been planning to use the A66 to cross the Pennines to use alternative routes or delay their journey altogether.

There’s been flooding in the Mill Hill and Elstree areas, which is forcing trains to run at reduced speed between London St Pancras International and St Albans. It’s impacting the following Thameslink services:. Services are facing delays and the disruption is expected to last until about 6pm.
