This is the spine-chilling moment a woman was burned alive on the New York subway as her alleged killer and a police officer both did nothing to help her. The footage showed a man sitting on a bench looking at a woman engulfed in flames while she leaned by the doors to the carriage as passengers looked on in horror on Sunday morning. During the incident, a New York Police Department (NYPD) walked past the burning woman and did not appear to attempt to help her.

The officer also walked past the suspect, seemingly unaware that the person was the one the force was looking for. The incident horrified people on social media and led many to question why the officer did not intervene. NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said officers were unaware the suspect - who has since been charged with murder - had remained at the scene of the killing.

She added: "Unbeknownst to the officers who responded, the suspect had stayed on the scene and was seated on a bench on the platform just outside the train car. And the body worn cameras on the responding officers produced a very clear, detailed look at the killer.".

She added three high schoolers informed police about the suspect's identity which led to his arrest. Tisch continued: "The person of interest was also found with a lighter in his pocket. I want to thank the young people who called 911 to help.". But the apparent handling of the incident by police drew ire from people online. X/Twitter user Bimmy said: "He was sitting right in the video and police told him to leave.".
