HSBC said in a statement: "We’re working hard to fix an intermittent issue with Mobile and Online Banking services.
Several people have said they are unable to access their bank accounts, leaving some unable to travel or find lodgings for the evening.
It is currently unknown what has caused the issue this evening, which has affected users attempting to use their mobile banking apps on their phones.
One person said online: "I have not been able to access my account - being only told when I went into the branch - can't transfer between my own accounts and now apparently restricted.
