I abandoned my career to look after sick daughter I'd struggled to conceive... only for my husband to have an affair with a colleague and get HER pregnant: EMILY MILLER

When I married my husband James, I saw our lives stretching out ahead of us: buying a house, starting a family, continuing with our careers – and falling even deeper in love. But life had other plans. Three pregnancies all ended in miscarriage, leaving me heartbroken. Without James's unwavering support, I'd have lost hope. Yet when our fourth pregnancy reached the 12-week mark, I felt that, finally, we might have our little miracle.
Then, at our 20-week scan, we were told there were significant problems with our baby's heart, a congenital defect so serious that we were given the option to terminate. Not only could our baby struggle with physical activity as she grew, and require multiple surgeries, she would eventually need a heart transplant and, if that happened during her teenage years, she might not live past 30.
In agony, we wrestled with our decision for almost a week before deciding we couldn't go ahead with a termination. I felt that in a way we'd been chosen to have this special child. James agreed, adding: 'I know that whatever happens, we can get through this together.'.
When Olivia was born, we were overwhelmed with love and relief. In the months that followed, while James went back to work, I gave up my accountancy career, dedicating myself completely to her care. Any parent of an ill child knows the strain it can put on a relationship. Yet as the years went by I truly believed that James and I had both kept our promise to be in this together.
