A hiring guru has revealed her golden rules for bagging a bigger paycheck this year - and she's offered five straightforward strategies to land a hefty pay rise. Sonya Barlow, who achieved three significant salary increases in her 20s, boosting her annual pre-tax income from £30,000 to £50,000 within five years, is now on a mission to empower others to climb the career ladder.
The London-based CEO has turned her passion for career progression into a thriving business, claiming to have helped clients secure an average of £11,000 extra by following her guidance. The 32-year-old entrepreneur, who founded the Like Minded Females Network in 2018, has five key pieces of advice for those fed up with being undervalued.
Sonya, whose social enterprise has reportedly aided 20,000 individuals in enhancing their skills, also shares some crucial don'ts when it comes to negotiating a raise. One of her top tips involves using the 'STAR' method to track your skills: "If I were to go back to my 20s and give any kind of advice, it would be to ask myself: ‘What raise do you want, why do you want it, and are you ready to take that extra responsibility that comes with it?" Sonya told What's The Jam.
"The first tip that I would say is to go into the job description that you currently have and on an Excel sheet, make a note of all your tasks, skills and responsibilities. So, imagine one column where you've got task skills aligned with the STARS method – which is Situation, Task, Action and Result and my bonus S, the So What? That way you can really start to provide evidence of what you've done and kind of check box where you've gone over and above.
