Having built a career working as an accountant, Rachel Ball was used to dealing with numbers and staring at spreadsheets. But, like many of us, she began searching for a side hustle that she could do away from her 9 to 5 - though her choice was a little more unusual than selling unwanted items or pet sitting. Instead, she became a private investigator.

“I’ve always been curious and had an eye for detail. As an accountant, I deal with numbers and patterns, and I realised those skills could transfer to investigative work,” she says. “I started by taking online courses on private investigation and eventually got certified. It began as a side hustle, but I found it incredibly rewarding.”.

Since beginning her new venture, Rachel admits that catching cheating partners forms the “majority” of her work, though adds that no two days are the same. And despite films and TV shows portraying private investigations as being filled with drama and chases, she’s the first to reveal that the reality isn’t as alluring as people may think.

“One day, I might be conducting background checks or analysing digital records, and the next, I’m out in the field doing surveillance. A typical day might start with reviewing a case file, followed by a few hours in the car, parked discreetly, observing someone’s movements. It’s not as glamorous as it sounds - it’s a lot of waiting and watching,” she explains.
