A Brit tourist was claims to have been battered by Thai police and left in his own urine after he committed a minor crime while on holiday. Andrew Hopkins, 55, had been staying at an Airbnb in Pattaya, south of Bangkok, and took a late-night walk through a neighbourhood. But as he walked through the area he knocked into a neighbours' residence sign. He admitted to having damaged the sign by walking in to it but was almost immediately shouted at by two security guards. But Andrew was unable to understand them and proceeded to make a gesture of submission, apologised and offered to pay for the damage.
Police arrived shortly afterward and hauled Andrew away. He told MailOnline: "They threw onto the back of a pick-up truck and locked me in a cell for around 36 hours. An English guy in there told me to just do what they say, and they'd let me go. Eventually, an Italian man arrived and told me I had to pay 15,000 baht [£360] in cash to be released.". Andrew was then marched to an ATM where he withdrew money as officers looked over his shoulder. After taking the money out, Andrew was then hauled to a police station where his money was taken before he was set free. Video shared online shows the grim conditions inside a prison in the city, with fire ants, cockroaches and upward of 130 inmates being stuffed into a single room. Andrew believed his ordeal might have been over but his night had just begun.
When he arrived to his Airbnb, Andrew claimed to have been met by the furious wife of the host. She yelled at him and ordered him to leave. He said: "She told me they'd cancelled my booking and that I had to leave immediately. I was stunned, but I asked if I could at least take a shower and collect my things. They agreed.". Andrew later reviewed that he realised something was wrong when he stepped foot into his apartment. He continued: "There was a funny chemical smell – I'm sure they tried to drug me. Someone had been inside, stripped the beds, and tossed my belongings into my suitcase. But worse, my money and valuables had vanished.".
He then claimed his debit card, credit card, phone chargers and a stash of £1,230 had all been stolen. He then went to confront the host's wife about the missing items. Police then showed up and started to batter him. Andrew added: "They attacked me, handcuffed me to the back of a pickup, and hauled me off to jail again. This time, they stripped me of all my belongings and handcuffed me to the bars of my cell.".
He then claimed to have been left on a grimy floor with his arm raised and cuffed to the bars of his prison cell. Not being able to make it to a toilet, his was left to urinate over himself. He continued: "Eventually I had to urinate adding to the pool of liquid I was lying in. It was disgusting and there was no way to treat a human being.". Andrew said the experience was dehumanising and was one of the most harrowing of his life. He was never formally arrested and was not given a phone call and has now returned to the UK. He is now pursuing claims with Airbnb with the UK Home Office reportedly launching a formal complaint with Thai authorities. The Mirror has contacted Airbnb for comment.
