Actor Idris Elba has opened up about feeling ‘overwhelmed and angry’ while posting a passionate video urging people to put down their knives in 2019. The Luther star has been involved in the fight against knife crime for years, and last year invited a film crew to join him as he tried to get to the root of the problem for his BBC documentary, Idris Elba: Our Knife Crime Crisis. The star bids to find real solutions to the problem as he says there ‘is hope.’.

“No issue is permanent, there’s got to be a way out of it,” he can be heard saying at the start of the documentary. Beginning the one hour documentary, Idris reflects on his “rant” during 2019 in which he said in a video: “If you’ve got a knife, or know someone who’s got a knife, tell them to stab themselves.” He then continued to say that “you’re going to stab your future if you stab someone else.

“You become a murder, you go to prison, you ain’t got s**t. For what? For some beef that lives within your community. You need to see past that, we have to say something about it.”. Cut to the present day, the father of three can be seen reflecting on his words back in 2019 as he says he felt ‘overwhelmed and angry’. Speaking to the cameras, he said: “Five years ago, I had this rant, I just felt quite overwhelmed and angry. It’s just a constant flux of young people murdering each other.”.

The star then went on to explain that although knife crime happens everyday, that particular day was “really painful” for him. He then recalled feeling the “need and the urge” to speak up. The actor had seen a news story about a teenage girl being stabbed to death in an East London park which prompted him to make the video.
