For those hankering after travel and foreign shores, a trip to a usually crowded but stunning beach in one of the most beautiful areas of Italy could be just what you’re looking for. If you prefer to travel out of season to avoid the maddening hordes of tourists that flock to the most popular holiday destinations, now may be the time to book yourself a ticket to one of Italy's most picturesque regions. Puglia is located in the south east of the country and makes up the ‘boot’ on the map of Italy. As well as being known for its stunning landscape, ancient whitewashed towns and breath-taking churches, the area is popular with holidaymakers for its incredible beaches thanks to the mile upon mile of Mediterranean coastline. Perhaps its most famous beach is located at Polignano a Mare.

The pebbly cove sits below the Ponte Borbonico di Lama Monachile bridge and has become what Conde Nast Traveller has called "Italy’s most photographed beach" - a reference to its undeniable breathtaking beauty and perfect Instagrammable views of the turquoise waters.

The town sits on a high cliff on the Adriatic Sea with Medieval white houses and buildings clustered together. The village centre is a maze of narrow streets that lead down to the beach and there are around 20 caves waiting to be explored filled with crystal clear waters. The largest is the Palazzese, which took its name from the palace it sits under. The palace is now a luxury hotel with dining areas in the recess of the cliff.

Due to its awe-inspiring beauty, the town and beach become very crowded during peak season in the summer months. Although the weather won’t be scorching hot in off-peak season, it’s definitely worth a visit in winter for those who prefer a quieter travel experience as the resort is a lot less hectic.
