He’s just started the most coveted - and well paid - job in radio. But for Scott Mills hosting Radio 2’s flagship breakfast show also comes with a potential downside too, especially for a newly married man. The 51-year-old will have to wake up at 4am on weekdays, which will mean very early nights.
Scott only married husband Sam Vaughn last year, soon after the pair were crowned Race Across The World winners following their victorious 7,700-mile race across South America. Even so, Scott thinks the strict early schedule won’t take a toll on their relationship. “"I'm at the exact point in my life where I should be doing a breakfast show,” he told Radio Times.
“It definitely wasn't 15 years ago because I really enjoyed going out and those two don't necessarily go together. But I have a very lovely life now, I'm very settled. "If I was in my 20s, I'd have mad FOMO - 'Oh, my God, I'm missing out on the latest album launch' - but I don't feel that now.".
Scott told the Mirror last week that he broke down in tears in his dressing gown upon hearing he'd secured the prized Radio 2 role following Zoe Ball’s departure, admitting he "fully sobbed". His first show was this morning, while Trevor Nelson will be stepping into Scott's previous afternoon slot.
No doubt Scott and Sam’s epic journey together from Belem in the Brazilian Amazon to the Osorno Volcano in Frutillar, Chile, fending off competition from other celebrities such as broadcaster Jeff Brazier and his son Freddy, and actress Kelly Brook and her husband Jeremy, will have helped prepare them for the challenges ahead.
